IACHR Announces Forum of Santiago on Strengthening of the Inter-American Human Rights System

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) announces the Forum of Santiago on the Strengthening of the Inter-American System of Human Rights, which will take place September 7, 2012, at the University Diego Portales (UDP), Santiago, Chile. This forum is co-organized by the IACHR and the Human Rights Center of the UDP.
The Forum of Santiago will be opened by the IACHR Chair, Commissioner José de Jesús Orozco; the Dean of the UDP Law School, Juan Enrique Vargas; and the Minister of Justice of Chile, Teodoro Ribera.
The first panel, on the system of cases and precautionary measures, will be moderated by Commissioner Felipe González, and the panelists will be former IACHR Chair José Zalaquett; the director of the NGO Humanas, Carolina Carrera; the director of the Human Rights Center at UDP, Judith Schönsteiner; and Jorge Castro, from the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Chile.
The second panel, on the monitoring of the human rights situation in the countries and promotional activities, will be moderated by Commissioner Rosa María Ortiz and the panelists will be former President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights Cecilia Medina; the IACHR Executive Secretary, Emilio Alvarez-Icaza; the director of the NGO Participa, María Inés de Ferrari; and Milenko Bertrand-Galindo, from the Ministry of Justice of Chile.
The Forum of Santiago takes place in the context of a series of subregional events on the strengthening of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, which are scheduled to take place between August and September of this year. These events are part of a profound study that the IACHR diligently conducts with the purpose of reviewing and improving its norms, policies and practices for a better protection of human rights of all persons in the region.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this matter. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in a personal capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
