On March 20, 2015, the plenary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) received the elected Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, who was accompanied by Luis Porto, one of the members of his transition team.
Luis Almagro was received by the IACHR Chair, Rose-Marie Belle Antoine; the two vice presidents, James L. Cavallaro and José de Jesús Orozco Henríquez, and other members of the Commission: Felipe González, Rosa María Ortiz, Tracy Robinson and Paulo Vannuchi. Also present at the meeting were the Executive Secretary, Emilio Alvarez Icaza Longoria, the Deputy Executive Secretary, Elizabeth Abi-Mershed; the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, Edison Lanza, and staff of the IACHR Executive Secretariat.
The elected Secretary General and members of the Commission discussed the challenges facing the region on human rights and the role of the Commission in the promotion and protection of human rights of the people of America.
Luis Almagro was elected by the General Assembly held on March 18, 2015 at OAS headquarters, and will take office on May 26, 2015
Secretary General Meets with the IACHR
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, was received by the plenary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on November 6, 2012. The Secretary General, who was accompanied by the chief of staff, Hugo de Zela, was received by the IACHR Chair, Jose de Jesus Orozco Henriquez, and the Executive Secretary, Emilio Alvarez-Icaza, in the IACHR President's Office. Afterwards, he met with all the members of the Commission. This meeting took place during the 146 Period of Sessions of the IACHR, which takes place from October 29 to November 16, 2012.
The OAS Press Department issued a photo of the event, along with which it was informed that: “Secretary General Insulza and the Commissioners agreed on the advisability of maintaining an ongoing dialogue on the common goals, shared by the IACHR, the General Secretariat and the Member States, of ensuring that all the countries of the Americas are fully integrated into the Inter-American Human Rights System, that the decisions of the Commission and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights are being followed, and financing is increased. Insulza considered that, to reach agreements and make progress toward these goals, dialogue between the IACHR and the countries is the way to achieve more effective results, and deeply appreciated the response given by the IACHR to the approach of the Member States.”
