Knowledge-based Society

A knowledge-based society refers to the type of society that is needed to compete and succeed in the changing economic and political dynamics of the modern world. It refers to societies that are well educated, and who therefore rely on the knowledge of their citizens to drive the innovation, entrepreneurship and dynamism of that society’s economy.

The OAS is committed to realizing knowledge based societies throughout the region. The Declaration of Santo Domingo, adopted by the region’s foreign ministers in 2006 at the OAS General Assembly states that “the development and equitable and universal access to the knowledge-based society constitutes a challenge and an opportunity that helps us to address the common social, economic, and political goals of the countries of the Americas.”
