Metrology is the science of measures and is closely linked to engineering and the reference standards. Measures are part of our daily life and are a base for the application and development of science and technology, communication, health care, transportation, and international commerce, among others.
It is well known that technology and commerce are the engines of socio-economic development of nations. In order to become exporters and compete in a world market, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have to be more efficient and comply with global benchmark of quality and design.
Through its Metrology program, DSTI is supporting National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) in the 34 member states of the OAS.
Advocate of this perspective, the OAS, through the DSTI, became a founding member of the Inter-American Metrology System (SIM), which forms part of a global network of regional metrology organizations (RMOs) under the coordination of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIMP).
